About us

Manly Yoga is a sanctuary from the outside world. A centre that provides a safe and nurturing space for our locals to practice yoga and mindfulness in Manly.

We are a supportive community of highly experienced yoga teachers who welcome students of all ages and levels of experience. All our teachers have extensive yoga training and although we take our yoga teaching very seriously, we love to have a laugh with our students along the way. It’s all part of the warm and welcoming community at Manly Yoga – a yoga centre like no other.

Our centre

The centre feels like a warm and inviting home, reflecting the natural elements around us sand, sea and sky. Manly Yoga is a place to let-go and re-connect with your inner peace and calm.

We pride ourselves on being a yoga centre for everybody, offering a wide range of classes and styles of yoga to suit the needs of our community. Everyone is welcome here.

Our teachers

Our teachers have an incredible depth of yoga training and experience. Many have lived in yoga ashrams and hence have a deep, authentic understanding of yoga philosophy, practice and lifestyle.

Because of this degree of experience and training, our teachers are able to tailor their yoga classes to the varying degrees of experience of their students.

Our classes

Manly Yoga offers various styles of yoga to satisfy the many different needs and desires of our community; from gentle, restorative, yin yoga to more dynamic classes such as Synergy flow and Hatha Dynamic.

We also specialise in mindfulness and meditation training and we offer yoga nidra in nearly every class.

Manly Yoga also runs life-stage specific classes, such as pre-and post-natal yoga; and we are one of the only studios on the northern beaches to offer teens and seniors classes.

Our ethos

We are a yoga centre for everybody at any level of yoga experience; and we have the
expertise to teach a wide range of practices.

We do not focus on physical image, competition, or perfect postures. We help people find
their inner peace by reconnecting with their body and accepting themselves for who they

Our community approach

We have a very strong sense of community; and our core clientele are incredibly loyal due to the personal treatment and holistic style of teaching they receive here. People feel looked after and accepted for whatever challenges and goals they have.

Through our Give Yoga Program, we offer yoga classes for disadvantaged groups in the Manly community such as our weekly class at Pioneer House for people with mental health challenges.

This program is funded by donations made by students through our weekly community classes and our monthly Havan and Kirtan program (a traditional mantra-chanting flower ceremony).

Our Evolution

Manly Yoga has an incredible 41-year history of authentic, holistic yoga teaching. We were one of the first yoga centres in Sydney and were originally established an ashram. This history has given us a depth of experience in teaching pranayama, yoga nidra relaxation, meditation and mantra rarely found at newer, more posture-focused centres. Some of our teachers have been teaching at the centre for over 35 years.

Manly Yoga has recently evolved from being a not-for- profit centre to a commercial business, run by Manly Yoga teacher Alana Smith. The new Manly Yoga will preserve the unique and wonderful essence of the traditional Manly Yoga centre, while creating a contemporary yoga centre that is able to grow and evolve into the future.

We look forward to continuing to welcome our regular students at Manly Yoga, while growing our yoga community even further with new and varied classes and students.

Our Director

BMedia, DipMus(Voice), BArtsDipEd (English), Yoga Teacher Training (IYTA)

Alana first discovered yoga as a teenager when her then drama teacher instructed the class in a yoga nidra relaxation. She hasn’t looked back since. She practiced Ryoho yoga in her twenties, but it wasn’t until she came to Manly Yoga, that she truly committed to her practice.

She has since completed her Yoga teacher training through the International Yoga Teachers Association (IYTA) under the tutelage of David Burgess, a master teacher of pranayama and meditation. And, due to her passion for yoga philosophy and practice, Alana is now a lecturer for the IYTA teaching diploma.

Alana just loves seeing the happy, relaxed faces of her yoga students and having a laugh with them before, during or after class. She has seen and personally experienced the power of yoga to transform lives; and truly believes that everyone has the capacity to heal themselves. All it takes is a dedicated teacher, and a willingness to be still and breathe. And of course, to keep practicing!

In her spare time, Alana loves to dance, garden, spoil her pooches and tend to her goats, chooks and deer at her hobby farm “Stag Hill” in Jamberoo.

Manly Yoga is a centre for everyone and everybody. We would love to welcome you here and share our deep love of yoga and yoga philosophy with you.
